Do the usual practices with painting and possibly staining which is to use a coating of primer so the outer coating will have something to stick to. One of the important aspects of an appropriate stain for wood is it is meant to protect the wood at a deeper level. Some aspects of your wood fence need to be given a bit more maintenance than others, and this concerns metal parts and pieces. You do have some matters of recourse and prevention though and they’re not hard to implement. You will find that frequent coatings of oil will work very well, but you have to be sure you remove the old oil. There really is very little that is metal but it depends on the style and design of the fence, actually.
Hopefully you do not want to have cleaning solutions entering your ground, and it may kill the grass as well. Most of the time you will want to do this if you are killing mold with bleaching solutions. After you clean your fence, just let it dry out or even better is to transfer the standing water to a bucket and dispose. The bleach and water solution will damage your grass depending on how concentrated the bleach is. Various methods have been devised that can basically do the same thing in one form or another.
One of the good things about wood fence maintenance is it is not a lengthy process. To stain, or not to stain is a common question that many home owners face. Then you should just power wash it and use a bleach/water solution once in a while.
